We bring in the New Year with news of 668 adoptions in 2016. Thank you to all the pet adopters and everyone who spreads the word about the wonderful animals available for adoption at DuPage County Animal Care & Control (DCACC) in Wheaton.
During the latter part of the fall, DCACC was faced with a near crisis situation. The intake needs of the cat population exceeded shelter resources. In short, DCACC was over-capacity: cats were waiting in cages the hallways for their spot on the adoption floor. As an open admission shelter, DCACC does not turn away any animal that walks through their doors. It is our goal, as it is the goal of DCACC staff, to never euthanize a healthy or treatable animal due to cage space.
With the reality of the situation in the forefront of our minds, we at DuPage Animal Friends worked with DCACC staff to offer two special lifesaving adoption promotions during the months of November and December.
Cats for K9s was a wonderful win-win-win adoption promotion! For every adult cat that was adopted during this promotion, a $50 donation by DuPage Animal Friends was made to the Jason McKie Foundation's McKie's K9s program. This program rescues pit bull dogs from the Bickell Foundation, trains them to be service dogs, then pairs them with veterans who suffer from PTSD. On top of that, adopters of adult cats received a wonderful pet for only $50 thanks to DuPage Animal Friends' Subsidized Adoption Fund.
Cats For K9s Results:
41 Adult Cats Were Adopted!
(Same Time Period 2015: 27).
Next up was the Bring Joy adoption promotion. This special promo was created by Best Friends Animal Society, funded by DuPage Animal Friends, and executed beautifully by DCACC staff. The December promotion offered a $25 adoption fee on any adult cat, any black or black/white kitten, and select dogs.
'Bring Joy' Results:
103 Adult Cats Were Adopted!
(Same Time Period 2015: 44).
What's more is that DCACC amazingly experienced the adoption of THREE bonded pairs of adult cats since December 1st.
