Would you guess that beautiful Lucy Lu is 13 years old? Thanks to the donors to the DuPage Animal Friends, senior felines like Lucy Lu can be adopted for only $1 year-round at DCACC.
So what's the deal with this $1 adoption fee? Well, the County must collect an adoption fee for every animal that leaves the shelter. As you may know, DCACC is self-supporting, meaning it relies on user fees to operate (not tax dollars), so fees are important for keeping the doors open. That being said, however, the County will accept the fees coming from us, the Foundation (a.k.a. the DuPage Animal Friends).
For harder to place animals like senior pets, the DuPage Animal Friends will subsidize the fees to encourage adopters to give these animals a closer look.
And by you adopting a wonderfully wise and magnificently mature pet, you directly help free up cage space for another needy pet. (Keep in mind that DCACC is an open admission shelter and never turns away an animal in need - so at times the shelter can become crowded.)
For example, if you adopt Lucy Lu, you are saving not only her life, but also the cat who will take Lucy Lu's place at the shelter. Saving animals is a job for the entire community. Together, we can give animals a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
